what is the normal IZOD Impact Strength of ABS, PETG, PLA and TPU?

The IZOD Data of Four 3D Printer Filament

• ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) - 15-30 kJ/㎡ (0.7-1.4 ft-lb/in)

ABS is an amorphous polymer with good impact strength and durability.  Its impact resistance is on the higher end of FDM filaments.

• PETG (Glycol modified Polyethylene Terephthalate) - 5-20 kJ/㎡ (0.25-0.95 ft-lb/in)

PETG is an amorphous copolyester that is frequently used as an alternative to ABS.  It has moderate impact resistance and durability.

• PLA (Polylactic Acid) - 2-10 kJ/㎡ (0.1-0.5 ft-lb/in)

PLA is a biodegradable polymer made from renewable resources.  It has the lowest impact strength of common 3D printing filaments.  PLA parts are more brittle and can crack easily under high impact.

As you can see, ABS has the highest impact strength, followed by PETG and then PLA with the lowest impact resistance.  The specific Izod values can vary slightly between different material brands and grades, but this provides a good relative comparison of strength between the three polymers.

The Izod impact test measures the amount of energy absorbed by a material during fracture.  It determines impact resistance and brittleness.  Materials with higher Izod values can withstand greater impacts without breaking, while lower values indicate a more brittle, crack-prone material.

For applications requiring high durability where impact or drop testing is important, ABS is usually the best choice.  For moderately demanding uses, PETG is a good option.  And for display or low-stress applications, PLA can work well and is the most eco-friendly choice.

TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) has an Izod impact strength of 15-30 kJ/㎡ (0.7-1.4 ft-lb/in), similar to ABS.  Some key properties of TPU include:

• Highly elastic and flexible - TPU is an elastomer that can stretch up to 3 times its length.  It is very flexible and durable.

• Good impact resistance - TPU has a high impact strength and can withstand drops and impacts without cracking.  It is not brittle and has good crack resistance.

• Chemical resistant - TPU resists damage from greases, oils, and other chemicals.  It has good chemical compatibility and durability.

• Hydrolysis resistant - TPU does not break down easily when exposed to moisture or humidity.  It can withstand wet environments without significant property changes.

• Abrasion resistant - TPU has a high abrasion resistance and does not wear away easily over time through rubbing and scraping.

• UV stable - TPU is resistant to color fading and property damage from exposure to ultraviolet light.

It can be used for outdoor applications.

• Food Contact Safe - Some TPU grades comply with food contact standards and can be used to print items that contact food, drinks, and other consumables.

• High printing temperature - TPU typically requires nozzle temperatures of 230-260°C to print, higher than most materials.  It needs to be printed slowly for best results.

TPU is an extremely versatile 3D printing material with an array of useful properties.  It is ideal for printing highly elastic, durable and impact-resistant parts such as:

• Phone cases  • Insoles and orthotics

• Handles and grips • Toys

• Caster wheels   • Gaskets and seals

• Shock absorbers • Body straps and harnesses
